Mono Images with Elements

Here are the notes from David from Monday night's tutorial.

Converting to Mono

Use Greyscale, left click Image menu then select Mode then Greyscale.

Use Desaturate , left click Enhance menu then Adjust Colour, then Hue and Saturate or use short cut (Ctr L).

With Elements 5 there is a Mono converter which is found Enhance Menu – Adjust Colour.

Adjusting Tones in Elements

Open Image > open layers palette > left click on adjustment layer icon (half black, half white circle) > select Hue and Saturation > slide the saturation slider to the left to Desaturate, next left click on image in layers palette to activate > left click on adjustment layer icon and this time select Layers.

You are ready to adjust the tonal range within the image.

In the layers palette select RGB on top of box that will show the three primary colours which you can now select individually then using the sliders below the histogram move to obtain the required tonal range you want. When you are happy with the result flatten the image.

Selective Contrast Control

Use Dodge and Burn in the Tools Palette.

Select Burn > set the opacity to between 1 – 5 % and to Shadows, using a large soft edged brush work over selective parts of the image.

Select Dodge > set the opacity as above but this time change to Highlights then again as above.
