report on the meeting janruary 28th 2008

A crowded room paid homage to black and white images last night.
David Morland's workshop and lecture was a big sucess with 25 members listening. He started with classic photos taken years ago by Ansell Adams, but they still rank among the best black and white ever produced, and this was our benchmark to achieve.
Using editing processes to enhance our images he suggested different ways by which a standard photo will end up with the correct variance and degree of black, grey and white to be spectacular and unforgetable photo. Each member trying to follow religously on their own laptop.
Oh would it be that such lesser mortals as ourselves could achieve such fame that would live as long as old Ansell.....
Maybe certain members who produce the odd startling image will obtain some lesser local praise but do so they must enter the Monochrome competition, but be aware the entries must be in by February 4th. AND the judge is none other than our resident expert, David Morland himself...
For the interested or converted the jugement Day will be 18th February, so come along and see if the message has got home.

Mono Images with Elements

Here are the notes from David from Monday night's tutorial.

Converting to Mono

Use Greyscale, left click Image menu then select Mode then Greyscale.

Use Desaturate , left click Enhance menu then Adjust Colour, then Hue and Saturate or use short cut (Ctr L).

With Elements 5 there is a Mono converter which is found Enhance Menu – Adjust Colour.

Adjusting Tones in Elements

Open Image > open layers palette > left click on adjustment layer icon (half black, half white circle) > select Hue and Saturation > slide the saturation slider to the left to Desaturate, next left click on image in layers palette to activate > left click on adjustment layer icon and this time select Layers.

You are ready to adjust the tonal range within the image.

In the layers palette select RGB on top of box that will show the three primary colours which you can now select individually then using the sliders below the histogram move to obtain the required tonal range you want. When you are happy with the result flatten the image.

Selective Contrast Control

Use Dodge and Burn in the Tools Palette.

Select Burn > set the opacity to between 1 – 5 % and to Shadows, using a large soft edged brush work over selective parts of the image.

Select Dodge > set the opacity as above but this time change to Highlights then again as above.

Useful tools, Namexif

Namexif™ is a tool to automatically rename photos with the date they were shot.
Digital cameras have their own clock and record the date to each photos with a precision of a second. Since the date and time is recorded for each photos (provided it is an EXIF compliant digital camera), Namexif™ is able to rename these photos according to the date.
# Doing so will: make chronological order same as alphabetical one,
# set a unique name to your photos

Tutorial on sharing your pictures online

Before the advent of digital photography, if you wanted to share your photos with your friends you either had to make lots of expensive copies of your prints from the the original negatives, or invite your friends over to look through your photo album, or even set up the slide projector and subject them all to a couple of hours of upside-down and out-of-focus holiday snaps. However in this modern age of wonders in which we live, it's relatively easy to share your photos with people from all over the world quickly and cheaply by using one of several services available on the Internet. Read on to find out how...

Hi Folks

Reminder for tomorrow night:

Please bring some prints (up to five each) with you tomorrow evening.

We are having an X-Factor club night and need to have some pictures for our "wise men" to comment on.
This is not a competition but an opportunity to look at and comment upon each other's work (in a light-hearted manner).

Look forward to seeing you all tomorrow.
