Ripon Photographic Society A G M 2009

In her opening address our President Sarah Harrison felt that we had had a very successful year. Membership was slightly up, The tutorials and lectures had been informative, and interesting. The Exhibition in the new venue had been excellent with maximum print entry of high quality.

She introduced our treasurer Andrew Liscott, who said the club was in a sound financial position.

The two Programme secretaries outlined some of the years successes and were positive next year would be even better. Paul Bullock said competition entries had been so high a limit may have to be imposed..

The YPU representative David Morland resigned from the committee after 19 years, his experience and enthusiasm will be sadly missed.

Sarah then proposed Diane Bowes as our next president who in turn proposed Kathryn Carter as vice president, both were accepted enthusiastically by members.

In closing Sarah noted that next year the club will have it's 60 year anniversary, and some major events are planned.

In the disposable camera competition Keith Wagner won the print prize and Denise Carrigan and Kathryn Carter were joint winners of the sheet prize.

I was disappointed to read a post that Paul Buchheit posted on FriendFeed today regarding recently passed legislation in the UK which might make it illegal to photograph the police there. The article, from Prison Planet, cites the Counter-Terrorism Act 2008 as containing the relevant legislation:

From Prison Planet:

"According to the British Journal of Photography, the Counter-Terrorism Act 2008, which is set to become law on February 16, "allows for the arrest and imprisonment of anyone who takes pictures of officers 'likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism'." The punishment for this offense is imprisonment for up to ten years and a fine.

However, even before the passage of the legislation, police in Britain have already been harassing and arresting fully accredited press photographers merely for taking pictures of them at rallies and protests."

In the UK, the section of the Counter-Terrorism Act 2008 that deals with this is in section 76, where it states that it will now be a crime to "elicit, publish or communicate" information about members of armed forces etc.

From the legislation:

"(1) A person commits an offence who—

(a) elicits or attempts to elicit information about an individual who is or has been—

(i) a member of Her Majesty's forces,

(ii) a member of any of the intelligence services, or

(iii) a constable,"

While I'm still not exactly 100% sure what "ellicting and publishing information" about members of the police might entail, I could certainly see the issue being raised where an officer was identifiable, perhaps even with their name on their uniform. In any event, it certainly would seem to give the police more ammunition, so to speak, to be able to use when asking photographers not to photograph them.

This legislation would appear to be yet another chilling move by the UK in encouraging harassment of photographers. Last year you might remember that the London Metropolitan Police launched a very public advertising campaign asking people to turn in "odd" looking photographers.

Retaining our rights to photograph the police is important. Whether the Rodney King case or the more recent case of BART Police Officer Johannes Mehserle's killing of Oscar Grant in Oakland, it is important that as citizens we be allowed to record the day to day activities of our police officers. Police officers wield an incredible amount of power over the general citizenry in our day to day lives. Being able to record their activities (as certainly they record ours) is an important right and power in ensuring that they handle their own power with the responsibility with which they should.

This law in the UK is unfortunate. It further muddies the water for what photographers can and can't photograph with regards to the police and further paves the way for police officers to harass photographers. While the law seems to be targeted towards people who would photograph the police with the intention of using it for terrorism, I could easily see how it could be used by any police officer to try and stop photographers from photographing them. I would much rather have seen wording in this legislation that specifically said that regular citizens have every and all rights to photograph the police at any time.

I thought consumer digital cameras had enough temperature operational margin to handle most situations this side of being stationed in Antarctica. Apparently, I was wrong, because I keep hearing reports on problems at low temperatures.

Case in point: A friend of mine bought a Nikon compact digital camera here in Spain, just before going back to Poland for Xmas. When she arrived to Cracow, she tried to make photos but discovered that all of them came up blurred. When she was at her family's home or in any other heated building, the camera would return to normal after some minutes, then take fine pictures.

But whenever she took it out on the streets, it would literally freeze. Not the glass outside, which was clean and shiny. Something inside was getting frozen and the resulting photos looked as if they were being taken through a frosted glass.

When I asked around to other friends in Sweden, they told me the same. Some cameras just do that. Our very own Andi had the same problem with her Canon Powershot in Canada. And her cousin had even worse problems with her cute—but useless under low temperatures—pink point-n-shoot.

Is this another result of the damn product beta culture? Have you experienced the same problem with your digital camera?

Tilt-shifting, that spiffy photo effect that makes real people and objects look like part of a tiny toy set, has become really popular lately.

Tilt-shift time lapse videos by Keith Loutit were recently featured all over the Internet, inspiring others to figure out how to achieve the effect in their own photos. You could Google a step-by-step tutorial, or you could save yourself the trouble and use Tiltshiftmaker.

Pop a photo into Tiltshiftmaker, move the sliders around to choose the area you want to focus on, and that's all there is to it. It seems to work best with photos that are shot from above and from a distance. If you need some inspiration, there's also Tiltshiftmaker's gallery you can check out and add your own photos to.

Pocket-Sized sent in a link to this article about the photography of Justin Quinnell. Using a pinhole camera made from an aluminum can, Justin was able to take super-long exposure, 160 degree angle photos over a 6 month period. The photo above was exposed from the 2007 winter solstice to the following summer solstice.

In the photos, you can clearly see the path taken by the sun each day, marking the passage of time. Justin has dedicated the project to his father, who passed away on the 116th sunrise that was captured.

You can make your own pinhole camera to take long exposure shots like this. Justin put together a howto that documents his own method. The hardest part is finding a good solid place to mount the camera where it won't be disturbed for months at a time.

One interesting thing that he mentions is scanning the film at high-res without even developing it. I've never heard of doing this, but I presume that if it works, it's a one time shot. Does anyone have experience with this that would care to comment?

How To Handle Cold Weather Photography

Cold weather presents a few unique challenges to digital photographers. In this post, Peter Carey offers some suggestions to keep you photographing when the mercury drops.

When the weather outside turns cold, there are a few precautions every digital photographer should take.

First, give your camera time to acclimate!

This one is very important and it's a two way street. If you're heading outside from a nice warm house, or if you're coming back in from a shoot out in the cold, give your camera lens time to adjust to the temperature change. Going either direction will fog up your lens and viewfinder. Leave your lens cap on when going either direction and give your camera plenty of time to adjust to the temps. The amount of time depends on the the difference in temperatures from inside to outside. The larger the difference, the more time you should allow. 15 minutes is usually fine but more may be needed depending on how humid each environment is. You want a slow, gradual change so if you can, leave your camera in a camera bag as it gets used to the change. While this may take a bit longer, it does help ensure condensation won't become a problem.

Next, you'll want to protect your batteries.

Besides the lens of your camera (even worse, your sensor) getting fogged over, batteries are the lifeline for digital photography. Unlike traditional film (with another set of cold weather challenges), digital cameras obviously rely on working batteries. The problem is cold saps batteries of energy even when they aren't in the camera. Carry spare batteries in pant pockets where they are close to your body. The warmer the battery, the better it performs. Even when your camera indicates a battery is dead, warming it up in a pocket (especially one with a hand warmer!) can bring it back to life for a few dozen more shots. Get used to rotating batteries in this manner and you'll be able to stay out shooting longer.

Let's not forget your hands!

Once your camera has adapted to the cold, holding it for long periods of time can cause frost bitten fingers. Just having your hands exposed to subfreezing temperatures for more than a few minutes can make your digits fumble and feel quite painful. Obviously gloves are a requirement for outdoor photography, but what works well? You'll need both the warmth of a puffy winter mitten but the dexterity and tactile feel of a thin, thin layer. Enter the Mountain Hardwear Power Stretch Glove! I've found these gloves to provide the best warmth while still maintaining all the feel of the camera I need. They keep the wind out and while they are no extreme winter glove, they get the job done.

Lastly, keep your camera out of the elements

While the snow may be falling and seem so much better than a rainy day behind the lens, be aware that snow can cause just as much damage. Carry a soft, water absorbent cloth to help dry off your camera while out and about. Also consider investing in a rain hood for your camera if it's a DSLR, which allows you to keep shooting in the heaviest of downpours. In a pinch, wrapping a towel around your camera will keep the snow off.

There's no reason to let the cold weather keep you inside or away from your camera. With a little preparation you can ensure great photo opportunities don't pass you by this winter!

Well gang, we fought the good fight, but it's official: Polaroid isn't making any more film after December 31st, 2008.

Sad though we are, we've found a few bits of good news scattered amid the wreckage.

1) The New Instant Camera
Fuji's instant camera, the Instax, is now available in the United States. The photos are rectangular instead of the old familiar square format, but it's the next-best-thing to our beloved Polaroid cameras.

Have a look at the Flickr Instax pool to see what the photos look like.

2) There's Still Some Film Left
Unsaleable, our favorite source for Polaroid goodness, has morphed into Polapremium. You can still buy film there, sorted by camera type or film type, along with books, accessories and stuff like that. (The name's no lie: it's quite pricey now that supplies are limited.)

Polaroid no longer sells film on its website, but it lists sources including Calumet, Amazon, and B&H.

3) Fuji Makes Substitutes
Fuji makes versions of Type 100 and 4×5 Polaroid film. That means if you use a medium-format Polaroid back, a Polaroid pinhole or Holga camera, or a 4×5 view camera, you can still get film.

4) New Zink Technology
Instead of making film, Polaroid's branching out with the portable digital PoGo printer. We were a little disappointed when we tried it, because it's basically just a tiny printer. It doesn't feel the same as having instant photos magically pop out of your camera. Sigh.

We have higher hopes for the TOMY xiao, which combines the camera and printer in one, but so far that's only available in Asia.

5) You Can Take Action
If you refuse to go down without a fight, get an action pack from Save Polaroid. It includes pre-printed postcards to send to the powers-that-be at Polaroid. It's worth a shot, right?

6) There's Still Time to Play
While you can still scrounge up some film, you can still mess around with it. Try double exposures or manipulating the emulsion, especially if the film's already expired. What have you got to lose?

7) There's Always Poladroid
If all else fails and there is no more film, at least there's Poladroid. It's a free application that's as close to real thing as it gets. You can drag & drop your photos into Poladroid to make them look like Polaroids. You can even shake the picture while it develops. Aaaahhh, that's nice.

Bye Polaroid! We still love you! Please sell the 600 and Type 80 rights to another manufacturer so we can have them back! Pretty pretty please?

Gordon Quinn, our judge for the competition gently chastised us for wandering from the title suject. He suggested various cropping methods to bring our photographs up to more acceptable standards.
But the ladies took the lead with 8 out of the 13 placings going to them. But the queen for the night was undoutably shirley Wildsmith with no less than 5 placements.

Guidelines to help photographers

Revised stop and search policy is released - The National Policing Improvement Agency (NPIA) have released the revised practise advice on stop and search policies.

The guidelines which may stop some of the problems photographers have had when photographing in the street may be put to an end as the NPIA have finally released their new policy.

"The guidance has been circulated to forces for final comment. As with all guidance, following consultation, it will require formal endorsement by ACPO (Association of Chief Police Officers), when it meets in the next couple of weeks," said Peter Mandich the NPIA's Press and PR Manager.

The policy clearly states that: "The Terrorism Act 2000 does not prohibit people from taking photographs or digital images in an area where an authority under section 44 is in place. Officers should not prevent people taking photographs unless they are in an area where photography is prevented by other legislation."

It does say if a police officer suspects that the photographs are being taken as part of hostile terrorist reconnaissance, a search under section 43 of the Terrorism Act 2000 or an arrest should be considered. The document then goes onto explain in detail how this should be carried out.

The policy can be downloaded from the NPIA's website and the section relevant to photographers is section 2.8.

Guest blogger Helen Bradley (fromwww.projectwoman.com) shows how to use the LAB color mode in Photoshop to give a punch to your photos.

I like to see lovely saturated color in my photos but sometimes the color I capture just doesn't do justice to the subject and it isn't what I remember the scene looked like. Boosting the color can turn a lackluster image into one that totally rocks. So, if you find that the color in your photos is lacking, here's what I do to make it better. The process is ridiculously simple, it requires no selections to be made, and it can be recorded as a simple action. It's my kind of fix – quick, easy and very powerful.

A word about LAB

The fix uses the LAB color space. This is not an often used color space and it isn't available in most other programs so you won't be able to mimic this effect in, for example, Photoshop Elements. However, LAB has been around in Photoshop for years.

In the RGB color space you work with the red, green and blue channels and in CMYK you work with cyan, magenta, yellow and black channels. In LAB you have three channels; L, a and b. The L channel is the lightness channel and, if you adjust it you adjust only the lightness in the image and you don't change any of the color in the image. This sets Lab apart from RGB and CMYK as color and lightness are separate in LAB where they aren't in the other modes.

In Lab the two color channels are a and b. The a channel contains color information for the green and magenta in the image. The b channel manages the blue and yellow colors in the image. If you were to look at these channels they would look very light because they contain only color information and no lightness data.

By separating lightness from color as LAB does you can make adjustments that would be difficult or time consuming to do in any other color space. However, that said, I think this fix works best on animals, landscapes and streetscapes – but not on close ups of people. On people it tends to destroy the natural skin tones.

How to fix in Lab

To see this LAB fix at work pick an image that has color in it but which you think could use a color boost.

Step 1

With the flattened image open in Photoshop, choose Image > Mode > LAB Color. If you're working on a flattened image you won't see anything except LAB/8 appearing in the title bar of the image.

Step 2

Duplicate the background layer of the image by right clicking it and choose Duplicate Layer. You'll make your adjustments on this duplicate of the background layer so that you can blend them into the background layer later on.

Step 3

Choose Image > Adjustments > Curves to apply the curves adjustment to the duplicate background layer. Don't use an adjustment layer as you'll only have to flatten it on returning to RGB anyway.

In the curves dialog, the L channel is visible on the screen. This channel that contains only lightness and darkness values so that you can drag on the curve to adjust this if desired.

Step 4

Select the a channel – this is the magenta/green channel. In a standard Photoshop setup green is on the left and magenta is on the right. Drag the bottom edge of the curve inwards 2-3 squares. Then drag the top edge of the curve inwards the same number of squares. It doesn't matter how many squares you drag but you must drag the same number on either end so the curve line crosses the middle of the grid – this stops you from inadvertently inducing a color cast into the image.

Step 5

When you've adjusted the a curve, repeat the process with the b curve. At this point the image is probably looking very scary indeed. However, you need to make the adjustment strong enough that you get too much color rather than too little at this stage. Click Ok to apply the curve to the top image layer.

Step 6

To return to RGB mode choose Image > Mode > RGB Color. When prompted, select the Don't Flatten option. This is critical because you want both layers intact back in RGB mode.

Step 7

Now drag the Opacity slider for the top layer back to 0 so you see the original image and slowly walk the slider back up until you get the amount of color you want in your image. When you're done, save the result.

Once you've done this a couple of times, you'll appreciate how much of a boost in color you can get and how fast you can do it. Record the fix as an action and you can do it in one click and then just adjust the opacity to suit.

In some cases altering the blend mode of the top layer can yield pleasing results. The blend modes in the Overlay, Soft Light, Hard Light, Vivid Light, Linear Light and Pin Light grouping in the Blend Mode list give the best results. You can also duplicate the top layer and apply different blend modes to each copy to bring out different areas of the image.

So, if you want to produce eye-wateringly beautiful color in your photos, chances are that a Lab color fix like this is just what you need.

The images below show the original image on the left and the LAB color fix applied to it in the image on the right. No adjustments other than working LAB and blending the resulting layers have been used on the right hand versions.

David Morland , a member of the Ripon Photographic Society was this week made a Licentiaship of the Royal Photographic Society in Audio/Visual display. This is great honour and privilege for David as he had to take the appropriate examination in Audio visual by presenting a 10 minute display of his work before a panel of 6 highly critical judges who assessed every detail.
It has taken David two years to prepare his display to reach the high standard necessary to pass the examination. Now he can proudly use the letters LRPS after his name.

Ever lost something that you loved? I have, I lost a necklace that my very first girlfriend gave me - I was fourteen at the time I think, All I remember is that she used to cry during "Listen to your heart by Roxette" I know, that's touching… Anyway, I lost the necklace that she'd given me for my birthday. I realize that I couldn't "Back that up" but I still remember how it made me feel…

Things that you can backup include your digital photos and the rest of the contents of your computer… These days drive space is cheap and easy to set up, but unless you follow some golden rules there is almost no point.

Erin from Fabrik dropped me an email with her ten points to a good backup for you all to try, I'll post them below.

The topic for this week is going to be "Drive" You can translate that any way you would like, but to catch my eye you're going to need to be creative and trying your very hardest!

Here are Erin's ten tips to a decent backup…

1. Reliability - Select a storage solution that has a good reputation, and is built to last. For example, to ensure reliability, all G-Tech drives come in an all-aluminum enclosure (no plastic), which acts as a heat sink, keeping the drive cool. Heat kills drives.

2. Capacity – Select a drive with enough capacity so you have room to grow. Rule of thumb is to by 2x to 3x the amount of space you'll need.

3. Connectivity – Future proof your investment. There are many solutions on the market, such as the G-Drive Q 1TB that come with USB 2.0, FireWire 400, FireWire 800 and eSATA interfaces so you can be sure to connect with any system today, as well as in the future.

4. Local Backup Software – Mac users prefer to use Time Machine (it's a beautiful app and is very simple). There is a plethora of PC backup software tools available – Arcsoft, EMC Retrospect and more. Any of them will do fine. The important thing is to just do it.

5. Online Backup – For added protection, in case of fire, theft, or other natural disaster, it's wise to keep a separate copy of your most important stuff offsite, and available online. Solutions such as Fabrik Ultimate Backup offer 2GB for free of online backup space. If you want to upgrade, it's only $4.95 per month for unlimited capacity.

6. Develop a Backup Schedule - Good backup software will require you to set an automatic backup schedule once – on a day or time that's convenient for you; daily, weekly or monthly. You just simply set it and forget it. Rule of thumb, backup weekly at a minimum, or as often as you save/store important work or irreplaceable files to your hard drive.

7. Back up Everything - Today you can easily back up all of your hard drive data. No need to spend time sorting through every file or folder. Again, invest in a storage solution that's twice the size of your internal hard drive, to give your system room to grow.

8. Rotate Backups – Even though they're secure, some people are not comfortable using an online backup service. If this is the case, give yourself added protection. Use two drives and rotate one offsite. You should always, always, always have two copies of your most important stuff…did I say "always"?

9. RAID it – Solutions like the G-Raid Mini (it will ship w/RAID 1 later this quarter) or G-Safe solution provide RAID 1, mirroring. Whatever gets written to the first drive is automatically copied, or "mirrored," to the second, so if anything should happen to either disk, your data is still there.

10. Don't procrastinate – Unfortunately, the need to back up data is often a lesson learned from a bitter experience. Don't let it happen to you.

I work in IT and (All jokes about a missing necklace and a bad eighties pop song aside) have seen "Disaster" happen, The company I work for, due to documented budget cuts wouldn't replace a piece of hardware, and as a result we had a massive failure of one of our nine tb disk arrays and lost just over a million documents, now, you may only lose a couple of hundred photos, but if you'd had that backup in place you would have lost nothing and you wouldn't have that sad face on!

Annual Exhibition 2008

Our Annual exhibition was held at the Allhallowgate Methodist Church in their new hall, a great place.. An early start by volunteer members ensured that over 100 visitors enjoyed a superb display of 94 of the members prints. The Visitor Vote for best print was won by none other than Dorothy Morland, well done that gal. Bill Forster was the lucky visitor to win the print. Photo shows President Sarah Harrison holding the print, supported by some members.

Dear Mr Griffin,

I am hoping your Society may have some record of a Tom Cox who established the above business in the early 1900s. I understand the business was taken over in the early 1950s by a Leon Smallwood and the premises are now occupied by Tunnard & Co, Solicitors.

Tom Cox was my grandfather's older brother and when he first moved to Ripon from Mirfield he was a watchmaker/jeweller and I had no knowledge (until recently) that he had become a photographer. He had a daughter Edith who could also have been a photographer (hence the T & E Cox), plus sons Cyril, Walter and another daughter Florence.

I understand the Ripon Photographic Society was founded in 1949 and that a presentation Crowther Cox silver vase exists and wonder if there is any connection. Tom Cox (85) and his daughter Edith (62) both died within days of each other in February 1957 and there may well be family descendants still living in the Ripon/Harrogate area.

Perhaps you would be kind enough to mention my query at one of your meetings as somebody just might know something.

As I live in Sussex I am unable to easily visit Yorkshire at present and would be most grateful for any help you may be able to provide.

5 Elements of Composition in Photography

Good Composition is a key element of good photographs yet is something that is hard to define.

Instead of looking at composition as a set of ‘rules’ to follow - I view it as a set of ingredients that can be taken out of the pantry at any point and used to make a great ‘meal’ (photograph).

Alternatively I’ve often described it as a set of ‘tools’ that can be taken out of one’s compositional tool belt at any given time in the construction of a great image.

The key is to remember that in the same way as a chef rarely uses all the ingredients at their disposal in any dish - that a photographer rarely uses all of the ingredients of composition in the making of an image.

Today I’d like to look at five of the ingredients (or tools, or elements) of composition that I draw on in my photography. They’re not ‘rules’ - just things that I consider when setting up a shot.

First meeting of our new season and "wow " it started well. 35 members and visitors enjoyed the famous photographer Derry Brabbs. He took us on a Magic Carpet tour of the Coast to Coast walk when he collaborated with THE MAN Alfred Wainwright.

Each photo had a story and Derry is a great raconteur, technical tips, humour and an explanation of how and why he took that particular photograph kept the audience captivated. Anecdotes about the great man unfolded all evening, if there were two paths Alfred took the highest,he was always right in any argument about paths and if the tripod was moved the photo was useless.

Starting from St Bees in the Lake District to Robin Hoods bay, up the coast, left at Newcastle to Hadrian's Wall, Derry brought back to the audience memories of favourite places and hills with his stunning photographs. Apparently the way to catch the best light is to get out early or stay out late. But then he gets paid for his photos....

New season starts September 29 th, with a visit from Derry Drab, Who?. He is only the bloke who collaborated with Alfred Wainwright when he wrote the Coast to Coast walks.Stunning pictures are accompanied by a narrative laced with plenty of tips on technique, composition and lighting...not to be missed.

Sarah our new president is raring to go ,Diane and Kathryn have put together a programme laced with new exciting ideas,plus,all the popular sessions form last year.New judges,different lecturers, practical practicals and competitions to stretch your imaginations.We even have a mike and speaker now so we can hear at the back.!

First competition is of course THE PICTORIAL, start getting your prints mounted now ,entries to be in by October 6 th.

Dear James

I am writing to you further to a study carried out earlier this year on the Voluntary Arts sector, which your organisation may have been involved in.

As a result of this study, Arts Council England have given their support to the North Yorkshire and York Voluntary Arts Partnership. This new organisation has received funding this year to put in place infrastructure to support groups such as yours. We aim to provide Voluntary Arts groups with information on the services available to them, as well as build contacts between organisations through a new website and newsletters. We also intend to offer training sessions and information on marketing and press relations.

As part of this, we are hoping to build a photographic library representing the wide variety of events and organisations within the Voluntary Arts sector in the region. Through this we aim to celebrate and showcase existing projects and inspire others to get involved. I am writing to ask you if Ripon Photographic Society would be interested in helping us to compile this library. We are hoping to photograph a broad cross section of groups, from Amateur Dramatics to Youth Theatre and I hope this would provide a rich range of subjects for you. We have a database of organisations that we are going to contact and request to photograph, however we would welcome any existing connections with other voluntary arts groups that you may already have. Our first project will be producing images for a newsletter to be published early September covering stories across North Yorkshire.

Please contact me if you feel your group would be interested in this project or you have any stories which you feel would be of interest for our newsletter.

I am in the office Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday to answer any queries you may have and I look forward to your response.

After the great success of last years workshops in attendance and new members, we are running the Digital Workshop again in Summer 2008.

Ripon City Photographic Society has many members who have a wealth of experience in digital photography.

You can take advantage of this expertise at our summer digital workshops held in our traditional home of Hugh Ripley Hall.

Beginner or experienced photographer digital Photography is the future and has brought back to the ordinary person the possibility to take, process, print or display their pictures as they want. You are invited to attend our workshops and learn more about digital photography and photo processing. Learn how to improve your skills and increase your knowledge of digital photography.

The price is £2 for members, £5 for non-members and £3 for non-members who bring along their own lap top.

External Competition : Inspired by World Heritage Photography Competition 2008

I would like to invite the members of Ripon City Photographic Society to enter the Inspired by World Heritage Photography Competition 2008. As you are perhaps aware the Studley Royal Park including the Ruins of Fountains Abbey World Heritage Site is on your doorstep, but don’t let this limit your creativity. Your photographs should be based on one or more of the Sites inscribed on the World Heritage List. Ancient, modern, natural and man-made: the World Heritage List is an amazingly diverse register of our planet’s most important places.

Harassment of photographers in public places?

UK Home Secretary green-lights harassment of photographers in public places

Jacqui Smith, the British Home Secretary has sent a letter reported on by the British Journal of Photographers stating that the practice of harassing photographers who take pictures in public places is legitimate, though there is no law against it.

'First of all, may I take this opportunity to state that the Government greatly values the importance of the freedom of the press, and as such there is no legal restriction on photography in public places,' Smith writes. 'Also, as you will be aware, there is no presumption of privacy for individuals in a public place.'
However, the Home Secretary adds that local restrictions might be enforced. 'Decisions may be made locally to restrict or monitor photography in reasonable circumstances. That is an operational decision for the officers involved based on the individual circumstances of each situation.
'It is for the local Chief Constable, in the case of your letter the Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Force, to decide how his or her Officers and employees should best balance the rights to freedom of the press, freedom of expression and the need for public protection.'

A-V or Audio-Visual is the name given to presentations where projected pictures and music or words are combined together to tell a story, evoke a mood or explain something. It is an art form that lies between still photography and movie making. For many years it was known as "slide-tape" because people linked projected slides with soundtracks on tape. That tradition continues but in recent years a growing number of people use digital photographs and computers to create their shows, or sequences, as they are known. There is a large community of enthusiasts in Britain with strong links to similar groups in Europe where it is often referred to "Diaporama". Leeds has a long tradition of excellence in this art and we try to keep that alive in our annual Colour & Music Spectacular.. We are a friendly group who meet regularly in Cookridge, why not come and join us.

UK man hassled by cop for not having a "camera license"

A quick-thinking police officer spotted a 49-year-old man taking photos of Christmas lights and busted him on the spot for not having a camera license. When the photographer failed to produce a license (which would have been a neat trick, since there's no such thing as a camera license in England or any other free nation) the officer kept the world safe from terror by making the man delete all the photos in the camera. "People were still taking photos with mobile phones and pocket cameras, so maybe it was because mine looked like a professional camera with a flash on top," he says. "I wasn't very pleased because I was taken through the crowd and through the barriers at the front and people were probably thinking 'I wonder what he was doing.' "To be pulled out of a crowd is very daunting and I wasn't aware of my rights. "It's a sad state of affairs today if an amateur photographer can't stand in the street taking photographs." Stitch Photos Into Panoramas with Free Software [Feature]

You can get decent photos out of a standard, consumer-grade digital camera, but a little post-processing can turn them into fantastic wide-angle landscapes. You don't need to be one of those people who can explain the concept of lateral chromatic aberration to get truly eye-catching digital pictures. With a few shutter clicks and some free, cross-platform software, you can easily mesh standard digi-cam shots into true landscapes, fix one photo's deficiencies with another, and create layered photo collages. Let's take a look at how to use the free, open source application Hugin to make two basic kinds of panoramas.

What you'll need

A digital camera that embeds EXIF data in its pictures (that's basically all of them)
A copy of Hugin (available for Windows, Mac, and Linux). If you're on Windows or Linux, you should also grab a copy of the AutoPano tools; Mac OS X users should have AutoPano tools built in. Follow the instructions at the Hugin site to install your copy.

What you'll get

Here's an example of the kind of photo you'll get from this process. Even though I shot this three-frame scene at Niagara Falls (from the U.S. side) in automatic mode, it still came out pretty spiffy, if I do say so myself. (Click for a larger version.) Now let's get started making your panorama.

Shooting for panoramas

With Hugin's software, you can blend two side-by-side photos together, or you can cram 138 multi-angle Grand Canyon shots into one mega-vista. Whatever your project, here are some guides and tips on how to shoot to best take advantage of Hugin—and most any panorama-stitching software.

Use consistent settings—If possible, change your "white balance" to a manual mode and set it to a plainly white or gray spot; if not, at least change from "auto white-balancing" to an another setting that works. Better still, if you can set exposure to manual, meter it for the brightest or most average spot in the scene. Neither is a requirement, but they'll help your finished product blend more evenly.
Choose a center point—Find the feature or area you think would look good in the center and take steady aim, at the same zoom level you'll shoot the rest. It'll help you align your pictures later and ensure you've got space to build on.
Shoot overlapping shots in ordered rows—If you're going for a horizontal-only panorama, go left to right, in a steady row, with 20-30 percent of the picture overlapping the last one, then do the same for higher or lower rows. Not only does it help you keep your shots organized, it counters the sometimes fuzzy or unfocused data many consumer cameras get at their exposure edges.

First steps: Merge a few pictures

We'll start simple, with two, three, or four pictures, shot in horizontal order. Load up Hugin, and you'll notice a series of tabs. Hit the "Load Images" button on the first "Assistant" tab, select your pics, and hit "Open." First-timers might get a prompt asking them to locate an AutoPano program—go ahead and point inside the folder you downloaded, but don't worry if you don't have it. Ignore the "Panorama Preview" that pops up and head for the second tab, "Images."

Remember that center image we took? Find it in the list, then hit the "Anchor this image for position" button, and, assuming it's a well-lit shot, "Anchor this image for exposure." Next up is an optional step, for those who know a fair deal about their camera—head to the "Camera & Lens" tab, click on the center image, and fill in what you know about your gear's degrees of view, focal length, color offsets, and other photo-pro stuff. You can save your information here for future panoramas. Once you're done (or lost), let's head to the meaty stuff at the "Control Points" tab.

You'll see two panels here, each set (at first) to display the same picture. Click the "1" tab on the right-hand panel, and you'll see your overlapping pictures. If AutoPano launched when you loaded your pics, you'll also see a good number of colored dots on the photo. Those are our "Control Points," spots that appear in both frames that Hugin uses to align and combine them. AutoPano does a decent job sometimes, but it often picks out clouds, cars, blown branches and other moveable objects, which doesn't help anything. For a seamless meld, I wipe out the automatic points (select the first in the list at bottom and jam on the "delete" button on the right) and start fresh.

Zoom in on the photos (select "100%" or the like from the "View" menu in the lower-right) and move the sliders so you're looking at mostly overlapping areas. Find stable points that have a lot of contrast, such as building and window corners, road markings and signs—anything you're reasonably sure didn't move from one frame to the next. Repeat this process for each set of side-by-side frames. You only need a minimum of two pairs for each photo, but adding a few more ups Hugin's accuracy. Here's how I pinned the Niagara Falls (Ontario) skyline:

Click the "Optimizer" tab and, unless you want to get tweak-y, hitting the "Optimize now!" button, which starts lining up those Control Points and shifting photos around. To see how Hugin did, hit the "Preview Panorama" menubar button, and you'll get a rough look at your creation. (It won't turn out exactly the same, but basically close). If it looks warped and off-base, you can head back and re-pin or add Control Points, move the crosshairs or use the "Center" and "Straighten" buttons in the preview mode to finesse it. Whenever you make any changes, however, head next to the Optimize tab and re-optimize—you can also change optimization settings to see if that nets any benefits.

We're almost there, seriously! If the preview looks decent, head finally to the "Stitcher" tab. The "Projection" setting is the heart of Hugin, telling the program how to bend and shape the output. For a few overlapping photos, "Equirectangular" usually provides the fullest view and best blend, but "Rectilnear" seems best when photos are tightly lined up. Hit "Calculate View of Field" next, keep the Quick Stitcher setting to "with custom settings below," and then hit "Calculate Optimal Size." The numbers will be ludicrously big, so knock one of them down to a standard size. Keep the stitching engine on "Nona," and make sure "Image output file" is "TIFF" and that "soft blending" is checked so the Enblend engine can work its stuff. Tell it where to save, and Hugin gets to work. If you're prompted to point to "Enblend," it's located in its own folder right inside Hugin's directory. Hugin will create temporary TIFF files and work your system pretty hard while it runs, which can take anywhere from seconds to a few minutes, depending on your system.

If the resulting image file is discolored in spots, it's likely due to camera settings or stark lighting differences, which, with only a few photos, can be fixed only in post-processing.

Shooting full panoramas

If you followed the basic steps above, shooting and stitching a wider-angle panorama scene is much the same, with a few exceptions:

Shooting—If you're covering a wide area and shooting many more snaps, it's important to stay and pivot in one place and focus on keeping a 20-30% overlap. You'll also want to watch for inconsistencies like cars, pedestrians and other scenes that change, unless you're going for a more artistic paste-collage look
AutoPano—You'll have to rely on this to create your Control Points, changing them only where you see problems in Preview or want finer control. Of course, you can line up matches for dozens of remarkably-similar pics by hand, but that's up to you.
Frame pruning—If you've shot a lot of overlapping pictures and want to get rid of a phantom arm, half-car, or anything else, you can easily remove entire frames and likely not damage the scene. Head to the Preview window, click the numbered buttons to toggle frames on and off, hold the mouse on the button to get the file name, then head back to the "Images" tab and remove the file with the right-hand button.
Stitching—Set the "Projection" setting to "Panorama" if you've covered a wide area, horizontal and vertical, or try other settings, like "Fish eye" for that "Paul's Boutique" look.

After just a little frame-pulling, and having shot with manually-controlled light, I got a panoramic streetscape (my third attempt) to come out pretty decent (click for larger view):

Once you've got the basics down, Hugin has much, much more for you to explore, including tutorials at the home page that show you how to use the app with scanned documents, to create true 360-degree panoramas, and how to get real geeky with the settings.

This is the method that worked most consistently for me with different sets of photos. I chose Hugin over previously-posted AutoStitch for its cross-platform nature. Photie, for your huge photo upload needs

Does the world really need another photo sharing website? Maybe, if that site is Photie.com. Photie's design is strikingly simple. It's easy to navigate, signup is a snap, and there are plenty of interesting photos to check out on the front page. The main attraction here, though, is the ability to upload photos of any size.

Photie doesn't have all the pro features that sites like Flickr and Smugmug offer, but there are plenty of users out there who think of those as frills. A free service with a nice, clean design and no cap on file sizes looks pretty good if you don't want to deal with stuff like social networks, mobile uploads, and signup fees. This is just uploading and tagging, like nature intended it.

The site is still in beta, so we'll keep an eye on it and see how it evolves. Frankly, we're hoping it stays with the friendly "less-complicated-than-Flickr, much-classier-than-ImageShack model". Before you start with the "not another photo site!" comments, give it a look. We think some users will find it's just what they needed.

Warning: Because Photie displays recently-uploaded photos on the front page, you might not want to click through at work. Squash Batch Image Resizer

Squash is a lightweight fast batch image resizer. I could end the article here because the previous sentenced is a good summary of what Squash is able to do. Add multiple images to Squash, select a new size for them, and click on Resize images. That's the process in detail.

It's possible to specify a destination directory for the resized images, add a suffix to the filename - something like thumb or small would do - and if you want to overwrite existing images in that directory.

There is no preview of the output images, no information on file size, no choice of file extension. As I said it's lightweight and does only one thing at the moment. I still like Squash because it is easy to use, mainly because of the missing options of course.

Adobe has announced the (beta) release of its online photo-editing service called Photoshop Express. This service is offered by Adobe completely free of charge and you can sign up now by visiting the Photoshop Express Website. When you sign up you'll get 2GB of space to house your work and you will also be able to showcase the photos you edit in a gallery (which is also hosted free of charge by Adobe).

As I continue to test this service I find myself wondering who will actually use it… Adobe says they are targeting entry-level photographers and consumers and they also justify the service only being available online by stating that they believe more users are spending time online and they want to be available to those online users 24/7 and hopefully attract more people to the Adobe Family. As I said before, I'm still testing the site and compiling my notes, but I will be sharing some how-to videos here on the blog, so be looking for those very soon!

No Minutes from last meeting, will take as read.

Presidents Report…Michael Voice…Thanked the members for allowing him to be President. The year has been exceptional, increased membership, successful tutorials; the Annual Exhibition was the best ever! The donations from the summer tutorials and the Sponsors had been sufficient to cover hall hire costs. The President thanked all members and committee who had helped throughout the year with the essential labour for the meetings, exhibition Etc.

Treasurers Report…Andrew was unable to attend tonight but his balance Sheet was presented by Michael. Although Andrew had had to take over at short notice with no records he had now managed to balance the books correctly.

Although cash in hand is good at the moment, income is slightly down on

Expenditure. We have committed funds to buying new equipment and need

£600 for reserves The Council have increased hall hire for 2008 so he suggested a rise in subscriptions for 2008,

By a majority vote the report and subscription increases were accepted.

Competition Secretary’s Report. Sarah Harrison We had covered 8 competitions

Over 7 evenings, with 24 members submitting 450 entries. Most entered

Competition was Monochrome; least was sadly the Presidents Competition. So a

Big well done to all members. Also entries were sent in for the YPU

Competition, and the Hague and Berwick interclub “fun nights “

YPU report, as David was not present there was no report.

Programme Secretary’s Report….Diane Bowes, in conjunction with Kathryn Carter presented the report. Although this was their first attempt as Programme Secretary’s they were reasonably satisfied with the results. Some teething problems had caused them anxieties but they had overcome them well, and were more aware of what to do next year. There had been a variety of topics from different speakers and all had gone down very well. The Christmas party was enjoyed by all. X Factor , a new approach was well received and supported and giving the members their own choices for the PAGB was innovative and appreciated

Summer meeting dates are…April 14^th, May12th, June 9^th and July 14^th. All will be tutorials on Photoshop, open to non members; these will be published on our website.

Diane Bowes was proposed by Michael to be our new Vice President, seconded by Keith Wagner... unanimously passed

Nomination of Officers for 2008. The existing officers were prepared to stay in office for another year unless there were any proposals from the floor. There was none. Sarah as our president had to resign as Competition secretary but a proposal that Paul Bullock be elected to the committee was accepted. Paul has kindly agreed to have a go as Competition Secretary

Michael stated that as he was retiring this year he will probably move out of the area sometime so did not wish to take an office but will assist Paul initially

As we are still short of committee members we will co-opt as necessary...

Any other business…

A There will be Photographer of the year next session, judged on points scores at Competitions, with a trophy for the winner.

B Possibility of 2 classes in competitions, novices and experienced. The committee had talked about this, although not happy with this way will approach the problem.

C We are still waiting for feedback from our entry to the PAGB

D Paul asked how many junior members we had, answer 2. Could we approach the local colleges, give open nights etc thoughts will be carried forward.

E Chase up the report from the Hague group, has it got lost in transmission, all will be revealed later….
